Richard Lätti
Admin

Richard (Riku) Lätti is a South African artist whose work moves freely between philosophy, music, film, literature, and the digital world. Known publicly as Riku Lätti, he has spent more than two decades building a body of work that resists easy classification: part storyteller, part composer, part philosopher, and increasingly, a builder of digital spaces where ideas and creativity meet.

Born and educated in South Africa, Lätti studied at the University of the Witwatersrand, completing a BA in 1995followed by an Honours degree in Philosophy in 1996. Philosophy did not remain confined to the classroom. Instead, it became the quiet engine behind much of his work. Questions about freedom, meaning, identity, and the human condition have continually surfaced in his music, his films, his writing, and even the way he approaches technology. For Lätti, art and thought are inseparable; creativity is a way of asking questions about what it means to be human.

Although widely recognised for his work in film and music, Lätti’s philosophical outlook shapes everything he produces. His compositions and sound design have appeared in several major South African film and television productions. He co-composed the score for the internationally acclaimed series Hopeville, which received two Rose d’Or Awards and an Emmy nomination, and he created the original soundtrack for Die Ongelooflike Avonture van Hanna Hoekom, earning a SAFTA Award for Best Sound Design. His later work includes scores for projects such as Abraham, the final film by director Jans Rautenbach, and the feature film Skemerson. Yet even within the structure of film scoring, Lätti has often treated music as philosophical expression—an emotional language that explores interior landscapes rather than simply accompanying images.

Parallel to his work in film, he has released more than fifteen albums as a solo artist and collaborator. These albums range widely in style, moving between alternative Afrikaans songwriting, instrumental work, and multilingual projects recorded across Europe and South Africa. Albums such as Pleister vir my NerweWOKNAKWYF!Aan’t Sterre Tel, and Radio Lava have received critical acclaim, award nominations, and recognition as influential contributions to contemporary Afrikaans music. What unites them is a sense of curiosity: Lätti treats each album as a new philosophical and sonic exploration.

Another important part of his creative life has been storytelling through film and documentary. He created and directed the television series Wasgoedlyn, a musical documentary project that celebrates South African songwriters and the stories behind their music. Broadcast on kykNET, VIA, and later E-TV, the series became a cultural archive of sorts—capturing voices and songs that might otherwise disappear from the public conversation. His more recent film work includes co-directing The Voice Behind the Wall, which won Best African Film at the Cannes Film Awards in 2023, and the experimental poetry film Ontwaak Deur Ons, inspired by the work of N. P. van Wyk Louw.

Yet beyond music and film, Lätti has gradually developed another creative dimension: web development and digital publishing. For him, the internet is not merely a technical medium but a philosophical space. Just as songs and films create worlds for people to enter, websites can become environments for dialogue, culture, and reflection. Over time he has built and maintained his own online platforms, including his portfolio site rikulatti.co.za, where his work in music, writing, and film converges.

His approach to web development reflects the same philosophy that informs his art. Rather than treating websites as purely functional tools, he sees them as digital architecture for ideas. A well-designed site, in his view, should make knowledge accessible while preserving human creativity and individuality. This perspective has led him to experiment with online publishing, multimedia storytelling, and platforms that support independent voices and cultural expression.

Writing is another extension of this philosophy. Lätti is also a poet and essayist whose work explores Afrikaans identity, spirituality, and contemporary South African culture. His debut book Taboek, published in 2024, reflects on the tensions between tradition and freedom, belief and doubt, language and identity. His essays and poems have appeared in publications such as LitNetDie Vrye Weekblad, and various anthologies. Across these texts, he often returns to a central theme: the search for authenticity in a complex and rapidly changing world.

What makes Richard “Riku” Lätti distinctive is not simply the range of his achievements but the thread connecting them. Whether composing a film score, producing an album, directing a documentary, writing poetry, or building a website, he approaches each medium as part of the same larger project: exploring how human beings make meaning. Philosophy provides the questions, art provides the language, and technology provides new spaces in which those conversations can unfold.

Today Lätti continues to work across disciplines—as a composer, filmmaker, writer, and digital creator—guided by a belief that creativity is ultimately a form of freedom. In his work, music, thought, and technology are not separate pursuits but different ways of engaging with the same enduring question: how people can live, think, and create more fully in the world they share.
