Junior John Ngulube is a respected business and financial leader whose career spans more than three decades. With over 35 years of experience in insurance, reinsurance, and financial strategy, he has built a reputation not only for understanding complex financial systems, but also for his ability to lead people and institutions through growth and change. He serves as a director of the In Transformation Initiative (ITI), where he contributes his extensive executive and strategic experience to initiatives that promote peacebuilding, transformative dialogue, and inclusive collaboration.
Ngulube’s academic foundation is both strong and international. He obtained a BSc (Hons) in Agriculture from the University of Zimbabwe and went on to complete an MSc in Agriculture at Pennsylvania State University in the United States. He later broadened his expertise with a Diploma in Financial Management, as well as advanced executive training in leadership and risk management at globally renowned institutions such as the Wharton School and INSEAD.
The greater part of his professional life has been spent in the insurance and financial services sectors. He worked for more than 28 years at Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa, where he ultimately served as CEO for Sub-Saharan Africa. In that capacity, he led strategy, operational performance, and expansion across multiple countries. His journey within the organization began as an agricultural insurance specialist and progressed through a series of senior leadership roles to the chief executive position. During his tenure, he also completed a two-year secondment at the group’s headquarters in Munich, Germany, where he led a global IT project.
In 2016, Ngulube joined Sanlam as CEO of Sanlam Corporate, a new business unit that he helped establish and grow from inception. Later that same year, he was appointed CEO of Sanlam Emerging Markets, with responsibility for the group’s operations across Africa, India, and Malaysia. He played a pivotal role in Sanlam’s acquisition of the Saham Finances group in Morocco, a landmark transaction that expanded the company’s footprint to more than 30 African countries.
Beyond his executive roles, Ngulube has held a number of influential leadership positions. He has served as Vice-Chairman of Sanlam Pan Africa, Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Marsh Africa, and Non-Executive Director of Continental Reinsurance Company, in addition to serving on several other boards within the financial sector. His insight and experience are widely valued at both strategic and governance levels.
Ngulube is recognized as one of Africa’s leading figures in insurance and reinsurance. He was featured in 1000 CEOsby Andrew Davidson as one of the world’s top chief executives and has received a Lifetime Achiever Award in recognition of his contribution to the insurance and reinsurance industry.
At the In Transformation Initiative, he brings more than business acumen; he brings perspective, steadiness, and a deep understanding of complex systems. He works alongside fellow directors to shape programs and partnerships that advance inclusive political and social processes, drawing on South Africa’s own transition experience to support societies navigating conflict and transformation elsewhere in the world.
